Cristian Grøvlen
Christian Grøvlen is one of Norway's leading concert pianists and serves as Director of KODE Composer Homes in Bergen. He is the recipient of the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize, the Robert Levin Prize, and the Norwegian Arts Council Young Artists Grant.
A native of Bergen, Grøvlen began playing the piano at the age of five. After early studies at the Grieg Academy's talent programme, he continued his education with Professor Jiří Hlinka before studying at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, where he completed the soloist programme in 2017.
Following appearances with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra as a teenager, Grøvlen made his professional debut in Copenhagen in October 2017. He subsequently debuted with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in February 2019 and with the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra in Oslo in February 2020.
His debut album, featuring keyboard works by Johann Sebastian Bach, was released on the acclaimed Norwegian label 2L in the summer of 2017 to widespread critical acclaim. The recording was voted among Norway's finest releases of the year by Morgenbladet. His second album, Eventyr, dedicated to Norwegian piano music, was released on 2L in March 2021.
Grøvlen is widely recognized for his imaginative, poetic, and virtuosic performances. He has appeared at many of Norway's leading music festivals, including the Bergen International Festival, Risør Chamber Music Festival, and Oslo Chamber Music Festival, while also performing extensively abroad.
His repertoire places a strong emphasis on Norwegian composers such as Edvard Grieg, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Christian Sinding, and Harald Sæverud. He is also the dedicatee of several works by contemporary Norwegian composers, particularly Wolfgang Plagge. Alongside the standard piano repertoire—including works by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Carl Maria von Weber, and Francis Poulenc—Grøvlen regularly performs his own compositions.
In addition to his performing career, Christian Grøvlen is an active composer and a passionate advocate for making classical music accessible to wider audiences. He is committed to engaging young people and local communities through music and artistic outreach.
Since December 2020, Grøvlen has served as Director of Music and the Composer Homes at KODE in Bergen, overseeing the historic homes of Ole Bull, Edvard Grieg, and Harald Sæverud, as well as the Edvard Grieg International Piano Competition.
